GENERAL APPEARANCE The first impression of the Belgian Laekenois is that of a square, well-balanced dog, elegant in appearance, with an exceedingly proud carriage of the head and neck. He is a strong, agile, well-muscled animal, alert and full of life. His whole conformation gives the impression of depth and solidity without bulkiness. |

New member and first time Laeken owner, Diane, has a long history with Irish Wolfhounds (“IW”). Says Diane, “Hard to believe for me, but I've been at this for 39 years with IWs! I started showing our hounds at age 19 and although I'm not presently breeding & showing IWs, I'm still actively working for my local club as an officer, show chair, in educational events, and rescue helper/adviser. I did add my interest in breed and judges' education, as I think it's an important part of being a responsible owner.” At one time, Diane owned as many as 14 of these giant hounds. Diane’s love of the wirey coat is part of what attracted her to the Laekenois. She is now down to 3 dogs total, one IW male, (180 lbs.), one female German Shepherd, and “Trooper” their new Laeken puppy, recently acquired from our own member-breeder, Lynnette Gandl. Trooper’s registered name is Wandrlyn’s Roguish Reeler. Diane’s husband, Randy, recently retired from the University of Tennessee, which gives them plenty of time to devote to working with Trooper. Living near the Smokey Mountains, just outside Knoxville, they are surrounded by many state parks where they love to hike with Trooper, who is on constant “Mole Patrol.” Having long been a fan of the IW’s wire coat, Diane was excited to acquire her first wirey Laeken. Another aspect of her attraction to the Laeken, in contrast to the IW, is that the Laeken is such an active, engaging breed, always wanting to be on the go, which makes the Belgians not suitable for everyone, but perfect for the Bresee’s. Diane is very active in the IW Club, recently held a match at her home, and intends to become actively involved in the ABLA. Lucky little boy Trooper has his own rally course in the basement of their home, lives on a 30-acre property, and will be involved in obedience, agility and possibly tracking.
